OpenMobile ACL for webOS resurrected on Kickstarter, hopes to bring Android apps to HP Touchpad

OpenMobile ACL for webOS resurrected on Kickstarter, hopes to bring Android apps to HP Touchpad

The promise of OpenMobile's Application Compatibility Layer is inticing: seamlessly run Android apps on another operating system as if it was meant to be there. Unfortunately for fans of Palm's last hurrah, the project's webOS port died with the HP Touchpad. That won't stop dedicated fans, however -- Phoenix International Communications plans to resurrect webOS ACL. Taking the project to Kickstarter, the team is showing an early build on an HP Touchpad, seamlessly running Android apps in cards alongside native webOS applications. Phoenix hopes that a functional ACL will reduce Touchpad owner's reliance on dual-booting Android, giving them the freedom to enjoy webOS without sacrificing functionality. The team is promising a relatively short development time, thanks to OpenMobile's early work, and hopes to deliver a consumer ready build in July. But first the Kickstarter campaign will need to meet its $35,000 goal. Interested in pitching in? Check out the Kickstarter link at the source.

Hickenlooper signs next year's budget for Colo.

DENVER (AP) -- Gov. John Hickenlooper signed next year's budget for Colorado on Monday, a spending plan that includes more funding for public schools, pay raises for state workers, and money to expand mental health services.

Improving tax receipts allowed state lawmakers to fund areas of the budget they had cut during the recession, including public schools and colleges.

Still, the governor and budget writers have remained cautious, noting that a lot of the revenue growth is driven by one-time money, like taxes on stock sales. Hickenlooper has also repeatedly noted that state revenue is still about $1 billion lower than 2007 when adjusted for inflation and population growth.

"But we are beginning to come back, and beginning to catch up in a number of places," Hickenlooper said.

Per-pupil spending at public schools will increase by $172 next year. Currently, per-pupil spending is about $6,500. Colleges are also getting about $31 million more in funding next year.

State employees will also get a pay increase of 2 percent ? the first in four years. And lawmakers are using $2.8 million to pay victims of last year's Lower North Fork Fire, which grew out of a state prescribed burn.

General fund expenditures, which lawmakers control, were expected to be about $8.2 billion next year, compared with $7.6 billion in the current budget year. The state's total budget, which includes federal money and cash funds, would be about $20.5 billion.

The biggest areas of general fund spending would continue to be K-12 schools, at about $3.1 billion, and the department of Health Care Policy and Financing, which administers Medicaid, at nearly $2.1 billion.

Lawmakers are also paying down $140 million in state debt for police and firefighter pensions, and adding $30 million for water storage projects in rural Colorado.

"We're in the happy position of no longer having to cut programs," said Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, one of six budget writers.

In response to last summer's attack at a suburban Denver movie theater, Hickenlooper and state health officials called for an expansion of the state's mental health services. Attorneys for the suspect in the shooting maintain he is mentally ill.

The budget includes nearly $20 million to establish a statewide mental health crisis response system, walk-in help centers and 24-hour phone hotlines.

The state's spending plan also raises Colorado's general fund budget reserve to 5 percent from the current 4 percent. It'll be an increase of $80 million.

The budget received little support from Republicans this year, compared to the many yes votes of the previous two years, when the GOP controlled the House and Democrats led the Senate. This year, with Democrats in control of both chambers, the budget passed without GOP support in the Senate and six Republicans voting for it in the House.

Many of the Republicans who voted no expressed concern that spending was growing too fast, while others criticized Democrats for passing new gun restrictions this year as part of the reason for opposing the spending plan.

HTC 608t spied, brings dual speakers to a One SV-like design

HTC 608t spied, brings dual speakers to a One SVlike design

HTC might be gearing up for a wider audio assault. Just days after the 606w made a pass through China's TENAA with stereo sound, a 608t cousin has made the agency rounds carrying its own pair of front speakers. If the 608t looks familiar, it should -- it's effectively a spin on the One SV body (or rather, the somewhat similar One ST from China) with both the reworked audio as well as the same navigation layout that first appeared on the One. While we can't verify rumors that the 608t will step up to Jelly Bean, a quad-core chip and an 8-megapixel rear camera, the TENAA report does show that it will include TD-SCDMA for China Mobile as well as GSM and WiFi. However subtle an upgrade the phone will be, about all that's left is for HTC to orchestrate a formal launch.

Boston bomb suspect in small cell with steel door

AYER, Mass. (AP) ? The Boston Marathon bombing suspect is being held in a small cell with a steel door at a federal medical detention center about 40 miles outside the city, a federal official said Saturday.

Federal Medical Center Devens spokesman John Collauti described the conditions under which 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was being held in the Ayer facility after being moved there from a hospital Friday.

Tsarnaev was injured during a police chase Thursday in which his brother, also a suspect in the bombing, was fatally wounded.

Collauti said in a telephone interview that Tsarnaev is in secure housing where authorities can monitor him. His cell has a solid steel door with an observation window and a slot for passing food and medication.

Collauti wouldn't discuss specific details related to Tsarnaev, but said that typically medical workers making rounds each shift monitor the inmates. He said guards also keep an eye on some cells with video cameras.

Also, inmates in the more restrictive section do not have access to TVs or radios, but can read books and other materials, he said.

"Really this type of facility is fully capable of handling him and it's not that much of an inconvenience because it's more or less business as usual," Collauti said.

Tsarnaev's mother said the bombing allegations against her son are lies.

Life is Good: Musings and Ramblings: Unexpectedly Blessed

(originally written Thursday, April 26, 2013)?

The days. ?They are so short, go by so quickly. ?Somehow Max is over halfway to his first birthday, and my baby bug is going to be 3 years old in 4 short months. ?What?! ?How did this happen?

I try to absorb each day; each blessed day I get to be with them, to play with them, clean up their messes, and help them reach new goals. ?Many days are calm, fun, and messy. ?Others are hectic, tear filled, and more than messy. ?That's what it's about though, right? ?I mean, whether you are home all day with your children or you work outside the home, life is all about the messy moments- whether they are controlled chaos or full blown out of control, whirlwinds.

It's hard. ?I've never done something that was so challenging in my life.?except maybe learn how to drive a stick, at which I was never successful ..? There are days I need more control than I have, and others that I let go and just let it happen. ?Those days, I have learned, are the easiest. ?This morning J.Tom, Lexie, and I sat on the bed. ?I handed her milk and declared today a NO housework day. ?No laundry, no vacuuming, no house work day. ?I've cleaned up the crumbs, and picked up toys after we played with them. ?The rest of the time all my attention was with the kids. ?I say my attention was "with" them, not on?them because though I was there watching and interacting I wasn't hovering.

Sometimes I wonder if stay at home moms are misunderstood? ?Not that it matters, we all know why we are home with our babies, no matter the reason. ?But sometimes comments from others makes me wonder, what do they think we do all day? ?What kind of person do they think I am?!? We don't lay on the couch all day watching tv. ?It's not so I can micro manage their lives and create a perfect specimen. ?On the contrary, for our family being home is about soaking in all the mistakes and character flaws, then turning them into lessons later. ?Not to mention just the time we absorb together, as a family, learning about the each other, Christ, the world. ?But you know, being a parent is somewhat about controlling what your children are exposed to, how they're exposed to it, and at what age. ?If I am going to take full responsibility for my children, I think JTom and I probably need to take control of the paths we lead them down. ?I never wanted a family; my dream at 15 was to become a forensic pathologist and move to California where I would live in a house by myself, or with my best friend at the time, and live a lavish lifestyle. ?None of those things happened... my best friend went to medical school. ?I graduated highschool early, partied until I absolutely burned myself out, started college, met and totally unexpectedly fell in love with Jtom. ?And then everything else just happened. ?Nine years later we are married and have two children. ?Nine years of blessings and growing together.

Blessings abound all around our family; we have been talking more and more about those blessings to Lexie. When she is refusing to eat her favorite food, simply because she is being defiant not because she isn't hungry, I explain that not every girl and boy get lunch every day. ?Or even food every day. The same goes for braiding her hair- not every girl has a mama to braid her hair, or give her a warm, clean bath. ?Those seem like silly examples, but she understands them. ?She's 2.5 but she knows there is a world outside our four walls, and that some of that world isn't as nice as hers. ?She will smile and say, "Jesus gave me a mommy and daddy and max and lunch!" ?*warm tingly feeling* ?(insert an edit: we went to the library this morning for story time. ?She told a mom there that "Jesus gave me a beautiful daddy." ?The mom responded with, that's right. ?Not every girl and boy have a daddy. ?You are so blessed.")

Then there are moments when I feel completely overwhelmed, asking myself what am I doing?!? How am I supposed to fit God, meals, play, learning, cleaning, and serving my husband- joyfully- all in 24 short hours? ?7 of which need to be filled with sleep, so that I am able to serve my family. ?This morning I was in the pantry deciding which lunch bag to take on our picnic play date with J.Tom this afternoon. ?As a million plastic cups fell out of the lunch bag I'd chosen, I took a deep breath and looked around. ?I was standing in a pantry the size of a bathroom, filled to the brim with food for our family and craft supplies for Lexie. ?I'm not sure what we have done to deserve the blessings we have been given. ?We have a home big enough for the family we hope to continue growing. ?It's warm in the winter and (hopefully) cool in the summer. ?You can't feel the cold air blowing from the cracks in the doors and windows. ?The floors are safe and comfortable for the babies to play on. ?We have clean, running water, toilets that work (hallelujah!), and silent pipes! (meaning no clanging and banging in the walls that wakes up sleeping babes! ?We can flush the toilet after 7pm woo hoo)

Our old home wasn't bad, it was a blessing as well; just a blessing that needed many hours and dollars worth of fixing up. ?We now live in a neighborhood with other young families. ?Our home is one street from the disc hockey park and community pool (which is more like a mini water park) so there are many places to run and play during these beautiful warm days. ?The people in Nebraska- beyond kind. ?I've not met one rude person, everyone waves and stops to talk. ?Blessings. ?They seem simple, but at the end of the day that went all too quickly, when my clothes are stained with spit up, and my hair is falling out of it's messy pony tail, ?this is what it's about.? It's not about excess. ?It isn't about more than we need (though we do have more than we need in many ways). ?It isn't about which group of friends you are a part of, or how many vacations you go on a year. ?It's about how we spend our days, day in and day out, with each other. ?It's about our kind words, soft smiles, and oh. em. gee. ?the hugs and kisses. ?It's about Max finally learning to fall onto his booty from standing up or almost?saying "mama," but it comes out "na-na."??It's about Lexie learning to write an M on her paper, reciting Bible stories to her brother, and showing him the "Moses's river" she made at the park.

Today, like I mentioned, we met JTom at the park for lunch. ?He ate with us, played with Lexie and then headed back to work. ?We hung around for an hour longer; Lexie played with a little girl. ?Her mama was with her, and being followed by a court appointed supervisor. ?The?supervisor was wearing a badge, and mama wasn't wearing much of anything. ?Much to my first?impression-ed?surprise, she was amazing?with the kids. She was down in the sand, building a mote and castle with them (which encouraged me to do the same). ?She had Lexie and her daughter sharing toys, helping each other. ?I probably seemed like a terrible mom, because I just sorta sat back in awe. ?This woman, in her skinny jeans and barely there top that matched her platinum blonde hair, seemed educated, funny, and in general like a good mom (not that any of those things would make her a bad mom-don't misunderstand me. ?I was thrown off mostly by the supervisor needing to be there). ?She invited us to play with them and their chalk, she made pictures with the girls, and even started acting out Lexie's favorite story on the playground bridge- The Three Billy Goats Gruff... ?I'm not sure where her life ?has been or where it is going, but today from 12:00-12:45pm I am pretty sure it was meant to cross paths with ours. ?On a day when Lexie and I were both feeling a little lonely, wanting a friend to play with at the park (Dayla and Ryker- we miss you!), she and her girl were a blessing. ?Looking back, I am not sure I had quite the same impact on her as she did on me. ?But I do pray that whatever her situation is, she can find more joy in park play dates with Kera, than she does in whatever got her supervised visitations.

We have had a beautiful, fun day today. ?I cannot wait to see what other blessings are in store for our family in the days to come. ?The great thing about blessings, you can't just sit back and wait for them; you have to put yourself out there, serve others, and get uncomfortable sometimes. ?This introvert has learned a lot about that in the last 2.5 years. ?(I know this post was rambly. ?I warned you in the title!)

How have you been unexpectedly blessed this week? ?

Lawmakers question U.S. government failure to protect Iranian dissidents in Iraq, continued funding for Iraq government, says Iranian American Community of Northern California

WASHINGTON, April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In a briefing on Capitol Hill, senior House Foreign Affairs, Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees members voiced dismay over what they described was the State Department's failure to secure the safety and protection of thousands of Iranian dissidents in Camp Liberty Iraq and questioned U.S. government's continued funding of Iraq in view of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's refusal to treat the 3,100 residents at Liberty humanely.?

"We should make sure that we as a nation secure the liberty of Camp Liberty. One thing we can do is... to put them back into Camp Ashraf, which is at least a decent place for them... Unfortunately, Camp Liberty was not a place of safety for those folks in Camp Ashraf. So we need to allow them to return to Camp Ashraf," emphasized Terrorism, Non-proliferation and Trade Subcommittee Chair Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX).

Pointing to the Iraqi government's refusal to heed the call for the safety and security of Camp Liberty residents, the Judiciary and Homeland Security Committees member, the Texas Democrat, Sheila Jackson Lee said, "Why do we keep funding Iraq when they can't deal with the human rights of the people in Camp Liberty? ... If they will not listen, then we have to make sure that they listen... Why we are continuing to give comfort to Iraq that continues to participate in the events that result in this devastation and loss of life??... I'd vote for any amendment that would question, diminish, and cut Iraq's funding?... "

Referring to the February 9th rocket attack that left eight Liberty residents dead and dozens wounded, Foreign Affairs Committee member Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) added, "[Due to] the Iranian government's efforts to tear down your people, they've moved them from Camp Ashraf to Camp Liberty, which is not as protected, as fortified; people are losing their lives, we need to send a strong message, my hope is that Congress will send a strong message that these people need a fortified place to live... We will continue to push the State Department and this administration to not let you down... We need to send the Iranian government a strong signal that this will not be tolerated anymore."

House Judiciary Committee Member, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) added, "The folks at Camp Liberty are commendable, [They are] fighting for liberty and in Iran... [They] need to be protected from attacks such as those that occurred in February."

Wall Street lower after GDP data, Amazon results

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks fell on Friday as the broadest measure of U.S. economic growth fell short of expectations in the first quarter and Amazon.com gave a disappointing outlook.

Amazon.com Inc tumbled after the world's largest Internet retailer reported its results late on Thursday and was the biggest drag on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes.

Gains by shares of Hewlett-Packard Co and Chevron Corp limited losses in the Dow. Despite Friday's decline, major indexes were on track for a week of solid gains.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 2.5 percent rate in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said, which was below estimates of 3 percent but stronger than the fourth quarter's 0.4 percent rate in 2012.

Even before the data, economists have raised doubts about the ability of the economy to absorb government spending cuts and higher taxes. Investors likely speculated the Federal Reserve, which meets next week, will debate whether to take more measures to boost growth or at least keep the current stimulus plans in place.

"The moderate move to the downside isn't out of line with the GDP data as light as it was," said Steve Sosnick, equity-risk manager at Timber Hill/Interactive Brokers Group in Greenwich, Connecticut. "It wasn't so great, but not bad enough to derail the freight train the market has been on."

The S&P is 1.5 percent higher for the week while the Dow is up 1 percent and the Nasdaq up 2 percent.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on the overall index on consumer sentiment fell to 76.4 from 78.6 in March, although it topped economists' expectations.

Amazon shed 7.4 percent to $254.51 after it said revenue growth slowed in the first quarter as the company struggled overseas, but margins jumped on lower shipping expenses.

Chevron rose 0.8 percent to $119.48 after the second largest U.S. oil company posted earnings that beat expectations, helped by foreign currency gains.

"In general, earnings haven't been blockbusters, but the fact that we've had a sharp rally through the season tells you the market is relatively sanguine about what has come out," Sosnick said.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was down 6.44 points, or 0.04 percent, at 14,694.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was down 6.84 points, or 0.43 percent, at 1,578.32. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was down 19.94 points, or 0.61 percent, at 3,270.05.

Hewlett-Packard gained 3.3 percent to $20.24, helping to limit losses by the Dow.

J.C. Penney Co was the S&P 500's biggest gainer, jumping 8.7 percent to $16.56 a day after investor George Soros reported a 7.9 percent passive stake in the company.

Shares of Starbucks Corp , the world's biggest coffee chain, slipped 1 percent to $59.85 after it reported revenue was slightly below expectations.

The PHLX housing sector index <.hgx> gained 1.2 percent and was on track for its sixth consecutive advance, getting a lift from D.R. Horton Inc after the No. 1 U.S. homebuilder reported earnings.

D.R. Horton shares jumped 7.3 percent to $26.31.

With 51 percent of the S&P having reported, 69 percent have beaten earnings expectations, above the 63 percent average since 1994 and slightly over the 67 percent beat rate over the past four quarters.

However, revenue has been lackluster, with only 42 percent topping analyst forecasts, well below the 62 percent average since 2002 and the 52 percent beat rate for the last four quarters.

Analysts now see earnings growth of 3.6 percent this quarter, up from expectations of 1.5 percent at the start of the month.

Exclusive: Imam of Mosque Visited by Bombing Suspect Speaks to TIME

The old imam cringes at the sound of that name?Tamerlan Tsarnaev?furrowing his brow into a bed of creases as he sighs and looks away. There is about half an hour left until the next call to Friday prayers, and he is seated in the third-floor office of his mosque in the city of Makhachkala in southern Russia. At last he indulges the question: ?None of our men, not a single person, has ever known him or ever seen him.?

It is a mantra that Imam Khasan-Khadzhi Gasanaliev has had to repeat for journalists many times this week, ever since it emerged that Tsarnaev, the suspected bomber of the Boston Marathon, had attended services at the mosque on Kotrova Street. The mosque upholds a more fundamentalist version of Islam than others in the region of Dagestan, and it has been known as a place of worship for suspected terrorists in Russia. On Thursday, Tsarnaev?s father Anzor admitted that his son had gone there for services during a six-month visit he made to Dagestan last year. ?He went with me,? the elder Tsarnaev told a press conference on Thursday in Makhachkala. ?We went wherever there was space. There was not always space on Kotrova. It?s small.? He added: ?But he had no friends there. You don?t make friends that fast around here.?

Investigators have not revealed any links between Tsarnaev and any Islamist groups, nor have they explained his alleged motives. But his acquaintances and members of his family have said that he became an adherent of fundamentalist Islam in the years before the bombings. The other suspect in the Boston attacks, Tsarnaev?s younger brother Dzhokhar, told investigators from his hospital bed this week that he and his brother were motivated by the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a report in the Washington Post that cited U.S. officials familiar with the investigation.

(MORE:?Will the Boston Bomber Be Executed?)

The officials told the Post that the Tsarnaev brothers were ?self-radicalized,? meaning that their views were shaped by what they saw online and knew of U.S. actions in the Muslim world. But judging by the opinion of the United States that Gasanaliev expressed to TIME, Tamerlan?s alleged politics would at least have been reinforced by the views upheld at the mosque on Kotrova Street.

?America will soon collapse. It will disappear,? Gasanaliev said matter-of-factly after sitting down with TIME for an exclusive interview. ?How many years did the Arabic caliphate rule? For hundreds of years the world was ruled by the Arabic caliphate. And it was a wonderful ruler. Now America is the great power. But tomorrow it will fall apart, a few more hurricanes, a few more of something else.? Pausing for a moment, he switches to a different tone: ?But today, we must all look each other in the eyes honestly, wish each other well, respect each other and love each other. There should be no violence.?

Last week?s violence in Boston confuses him not because it was indiscriminate, but because it has caused such an uproar, bringing a pack of journalists to Dagestan with questions for him and his mosque. ?Somebody from somewhere was killed, or something was fabricated, and so much noise because of this,? he says with bewilderment. ?How much has America done in Vietnam, in all its wars everywhere. Right now it is turning the entire Arab world upside down. They kill hundreds, thousands, millions of people and nobody is interested. But over there someone does something, blows something up, someone is killed, and because of this they send so many people [journalists] here. They are surprised by this.?

He is adamant that his mosque, a bastion of conservative Salafi Islam in Dagestan, had nothing to do with Tsarnaev?s turn to radicalism or with the Boston bombings. ?There is no politics here,? he says. ?Our sermons are clean.? And indeed, the sermon he gave at Friday prayers this week avoided politics completely, focusing on the need for piety, for all Muslims to stay on the ?straight path? set out by Allah. ?Do not fear, and do not despair, but rejoice in the paradise that has been promised to you,? he proclaimed to the congregation of men, whose numbers packed the mosque and spilled out into the courtyard. Even amid the steel bars and bricks being used for the mosque?s reconstruction, they laid down prayer rugs and took in the sermon, the vast majority between the ages of 20 and 30.

Few of them would speak openly to a reporter afterward, but some of those who did said they appreciated the mosque on Kotrova Street for not shying from political and social issues. ?He tells it straight,? a worshiper named Magomedgadzhi said of the imam, declining to give his surname. ?He can criticize the people in power if they deserve it. You don?t really hear that anywhere else.?

(MORE: Behind Tamerlan Tsarnaev?s Dagestan Visits.)

The Salafi movement?s confrontations with the state are well known throughout this region of Russia. The movement acts as an alternative to the more mainstream Sufi mosques, which are sanctioned and supported by the state. ?They have not given a single kopek to help our mosque,? Gasanaliev says of the Sufis and their friends in government. ?They accuse us of being Wahhabists,? he says, referring to an ultra-conservative brand of Sunni Islam that is synonymous in Russia with terrorism.

Although he does try to dislodge that reputation and cooperate with the authorities? Gasanaliev is deputy mufti of Dagestan, a role that grants him some clout with regional authorities ? his mosque is watched by the security services with a magnifying glass. Two sources close to the local branch of the FSB, Russia?s version of the FBI, told TIME on Monday that associating with the Salafi movement is enough to get on a counter-terrorism watch list in Russia. That was the case with Tsarnaev during his time in Dagestan, where he was flagged by the FSB as a potential extremist, the sources said.

In some ways, the scrutiny is not surprising. Congregants at the mosque on Kotrova Street have often been killed in shootouts with Russia?s counter-terrorism forces, and the Salafi bookstore across the street offers literature that has been blacklisted by the state. Tucked in among copies of the Koran and video lectures on such topics as courtship and divorce, there are the tracts of Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a pan-Islamic political party that operates freely in the West but is banned in Russia as an extremist organization, as well as in other former Soviet republics in Central Asia.

Asked the reason for the state?s attention to his mosque, Gasanaliev smiles and waves his hands dismissively. ?They are making elephants from flies,? he says. What matters to him is that his mosque is open to all comers, whatever their views or denominations. ?We have no politics here,? he says. ?Our law is sharia. You come here to pray and you leave. Anyone can come here. Nobody will ask you who you are. That is part of sharia.? And what his congregants do from there is none of his responsibility.

The iTunes Store turns 10 this Sunday, April 28, and Apple is celebrating with a new area in the store chronicling a decade of selling music, movies, TV, and apps. ?A Decade of iTunes? commemorates the store?s milestones in a separate section for each year.

Celebrate 10 years of iTunes-a decade marked by stunning musical and technological evolution. From the historic iPod releases to the debut of groundbreaking artists, our timeline captures key moments in our history. Plus, take a look back at the defining albums and songs that hit the top of the charts each year.

The iTunes Music Store debuted at a time when music piracy was rampant, and it gave people a safe, reliable, and legal way of purchasing music for a reasonable price. Overtime, Apples has added movies and TV shows, along with the App Store. While subscription services like Spotify and Rdio have proven popular with many, iTunes still remains the top music retailer in the world, and its importance to the current age of digital music can?t be overstated.

Google Tests Search Without Instant Previews, Moves Sharing Tool, Cached And Similar Pages To New Drop-Down Menu

google logoBack in 2010, Google launched Instant Preview to provide users with a quick way to get a graphic preview of a webpage before you click on the actual link. Now, as first spotted by Alex Chitu from the Google Operating System blog, it looks like Google is thinking about removing this feature and replacing it with a new drop-down menu. Instant Preview is probably not a huge hit, given that Google wouldn’t consider removing it if it were a popular feature. It did hide a bit of useful functionality besides the previews, however. Opening these Instant Previews allowed you to also find similar pages and access the Google+ Share feature. In addition, it was also the only way to find Google’s cached version of a given page, too. All of these features are still there in this new version, but they are now accessible through a drop-down menu right next to the main link. It’s not clear if this is just a test, or if Google is indeed fully removing this feature and replacing it with the new drop-down menu. We have contacted Google about this change and will update this post once we learn more. Here is what this looks like for TechCrunch (“Similar,” for some reason, only appears for a subset of results):

'How' often is more important than 'why' when describing breakups

Apr. 23, 2013 ? Maybe rocker Greg Kihn was being prophetic in his 1981 hit, "The Breakup Song," with its chorus, "They don't write 'em like that anymore." An Indiana University professor's new paper looks at how people write to break up today, including through texts, emails and social media.

According to a new research article by Ilana Gershon, associate professor of communication and culture in IU's College of Arts and Sciences, part of what makes the breakup stories she collected into American stories is that the medium seems so important to the message when breaking off relationships.

"It wasn't until after I had collected many breakup stories that I realized my students had told me something quite revealing that would come up time and time again. ... American undergraduates focus on the 'how' of a breakup when describing their breakups, not the 'why' or the 'who,'" Gershon said.

Her paper, "Everytime We Type Goodbye: Heartbreak American Style," published in the journal Anthropology Now, discusses how the narratives of breakups in the United States differ from those in other countries.

Gershon also is the author of the 2010 book, "The Breakup 2.0: Disconnecting over New Media" (Cornell University Press), which argued that Facebook and other forms of social networking have radically changed the playing field of dating today.

She interviewed 72 people at length for her paper, including 66 undergraduate college students who communicate frequently with new technologies. She found that when American college students tell their breakup stories, they consist of a string of conversations, and people always describe when anyone switched media to continue the conversations.

"The medium used for the conversation mattered enough to be almost always mentioned," Gershon said. "People would invariably mark when a different medium was used, explaining when communication shifted from voicemail to texting to Facebook and then to phone."

Her results differ from other ethnographic research done elsewhere, such as in Japan and Britain, where the story often focuses on justifying why the relationship had to end. Character was the emphasis overseas, not the method.

"The American undergraduates I interviewed were not discussing their breakups in terms of the right balance of dependence, or even the kind of people who might break up," Gershon added.

"The closest an interviewee came to describing herself as a particular type of person was a woman who decided not to show anyone else the text breakup message her ex had sent her. Even this example shows that U.S. undergraduates were using the 'how' of the breakup as the narrative frame to explore what an end of the relationship might mean for them."

In many cases, the young people Gershon interviewed were looking for validation that it had been a bad breakup and the medium was crucial evidence.

In the paper, Gershon cited one example of a breakup done through a text message. "Rebecca" wanted to talk on the phone with her former boyfriend to have what she considered a "proper ending to the relationship."

"As in most of the narratives I collected, the 'how' of the breakup was the central focus of Rebecca's story," Gershon said. "This 'how' stood in for other questions that haunted Rebecca as well -- namely why her ex-boyfriend decided to break off the relationship.

"Rebecca and others did not focus on the 'why' of the breakup or the 'who' of the breakup, although this course would come up in the narratives as secondary themes," she said. "By focusing on the 'how,' she was able to avoid these often unanswerable questions -- unanswerable questions like why the breakup had happened in the first place and who really was to blame."

Google Street View adds Hungary and Lesotho, hits 50-country milestone

If you've been taking far too many virtual road trips after employing the (unofficial) Street View Hyperlapse chauffeur, you may be running out of places to go next. Well, today Google has added Hungary and Lesotho (a country within South Africa) to the list of lands you can vicariously visit, which brings the total number of Street View-catalogued countries to 50. This being the "largest single update" since, well, the last big one, Google has also added "new and updated imagery for nearly 350,000 miles of roads across 14 countries," including more places of interest for its special collections, thanks to the Street View trike. So, why venture outdoors this lunchtime, when you can wander the streets of Budapest instead?

Arizona's Gov. Brewer says she needs border help

Power Players

As the Senate moves to consider the ?Gang of 8? immigration reform bill, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer is calling on the federal government to do more to secure her state?s border, which she refers to as ?the gateway for the criminal element."

Brewer says the federal government has given increased security resources, ranging from electronic surveillance to fencing, to other border states, while ignoring such requests for Arizona.

?We don't understand why the federal government will do that for other states, but they refuse to do it in Arizona,? Brewer says in an interview with ABC's Senior National Correspondent Jim Avila. ?I am not going to sit back and be the governor of the state of Arizona and not make a position for Arizona to the federal government that our border needs to be secured. It's as simple as that.?

The "Gang of 8" bill now before the Senate promises to provide more resources for border security, if passed, but Brewer says she won't be supportive of the legislation, which also provides a path to citizenship for the estimated 10-12 million people currently living in the United States illegally, until she and ranchers living along the border are convinced the border is secure.

?They had a good relationship with immigrants coming across working on their ranches and going back and um very comfortable?and things have changed,? Brewer says of the ranchers along the border. ?They don't feel safe, they feel very insecure. They don't believe that the border is secured, their wives, their children, they're very, very guarded.?

When asked how she would reply if a one of the ?Gang of 8? senators were to call her, Brewer replies: ?If they were to call me today, I would say our border is not secure, and I would not be in a position to support their measure.?

To hear more of the interview with the governor of Arizona, including her explanation on why she believes those people who came to the United States should be labeled as ?illegal immigrants,? check out this episode of Power Players.

ABC's Serena Marshall and Betsy Klein contributed to this report.

France legalizes gay marriage after harsh debate

PARIS (AP) ? France legalized gay marriage on Tuesday after a wrenching national debate and protests that flooded the streets of Paris. Legions of officers and water cannon stood ready near France's National Assembly ahead of the final vote, bracing for possible violence on an issue that galvanized the country's faltering conservative movement.

The measure passed easily in the Socialist-majority Assembly, 331-225, just minutes after the president of the legislative body expelled a disruptive protester in pink, the color adopted by French opponents of gay marriage.

"Only those who love democracy are here," Claude Bartelone, the Assembly president, said angrily.

In recent weeks, violent attacks against gay couples have spiked and some legislators have received threats ? including Bartelone, who got a gunpowder-filled envelope on Monday.

One of the biggest protests against same-sex marriage drew together hundreds of thousands of people bused in from the French provinces ? conservative activists, schoolchildren with their parents, retirees, priests and others. That demonstration ended in blasts of tear gas, as right-wing rabble-rousers, some in masks and hoods, led the charge against police, damaging cars along the Champs-Elysees avenue and making a break for the presidential palace.

Justice Minister Christiane Taubira told lawmakers that the first weddings could be as soon as June.

"We believe that the first weddings will be beautiful and that they'll bring a breeze of joy, and that those who are opposed to them today will surely be confounded when they are overcome with the happiness of the newlyweds and the families," she said.

When President Francois Hollande promised to legalize gay marriage, it was seen as relatively uncontroversial. But the issue has become a touchstone as his popularity has sunk to unprecedented lows, largely over France's ailing economy.

But the most visible face in the fight against gay marriage ? a former comedienne who goes by the name of Frigide Barjot ? said the movement named "A Protest for Everyone" will continue beyond the law's passage and possibly field candidates in 2014 municipal elections. She said anyone involved in protest violence would be marginalized, but blamed the government for its failure to listen.

"The violence comes from the way in which this was imposed," Barjot told France Info radio.

French conservatives, decimated by infighting and the election loss of standard-bearer Nicolas Sarkozy, had found a rallying cause in same-sex marriage. Hoping to keep the issue alive, the conservative UMP party planned to challenge the law in the Constitutional Council.

French civil unions, allowed since 1999, are at least as popular among heterosexuals as among gay and lesbian couples. But that law has no provisions for adoption, and the strongest opposition in France as far as same-sex couples goes comes when children are involved. According to recent polls, just over half of French are opposed to adoption by same-sex couples ? about the same number who said they favored same-sex marriage.

Christophe Crepin, spokesman for the police union UNSA, says the extraordinary security Tuesday includes a total of about 4,000 officers in the area near the National Assembly building and water cannon positioned nearby. One group of anti-riot police swarmed the banks of the Seine River about a quarter-mile from the legislature, hours before protests were scheduled there.

France is the 14th country to legalize gay marriage. On the cover of Tuesday's Liberation newspaper, the famed gay photographers Pierre and Gilles took over the front page and several of the inside pages, splashing them with some of their most provocative photos, including one of three soccer players ? nude but for the footwear ? facing the camera.

In New Zealand, where gay marriage enjoys popular support, people gathered outside Parliament and joined in singing a traditional Maori love ballad after a vote last week making it legal. Nine states and the District of Columbia in the U.S. also recognize such marriages, but the federal government does not.

Trump pays latest 'Celebrity Apprentice' loser

NBC

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Has tough boardroom boss Donald Trump gone soft? Well, if his grand gesture at the end of Sunday's episode of "All-Star Celebrity Apprentice" is anything to go by, then the answer is yes!

It all happened after Team Power lost yet another challenge. When tasked with creating an engaging tourism campaign for South Africa, it was Brande Roderick who led the team to a loss against Plan B's superior ad.

Trump, with this week's boardroom advisor -- former contestant Bret Michaels -- by his side, grilled Roderick about the failure and her odd choice to have Marilu Henner and Trace Adkins face the firing squad with her.

"You're with two people who don't deserve to be fired, wouldn't you agree?" Trump said.

Roderick admitted he had a point.

"You know what that means, right?" he asked.

Of course, everyone in the boardroom knew what that meant. Roderick was toast. But no sooner had Trump fired her than Adkins made a special request.

"Give her some money!" the singer said. "She didn't win nothing."

Yes, despite the fact that Roderick raised plenty of money in the game, she didn't raise any for her charity, Promises 2 Kids -- a non-profit that helps abused and neglected foster children.

Hearing that, Trump decided to forgo the usual money-goes-to-winners way of the game and offered to give Roderick's worthy charity $20,000 just because.

What do you think of Trump's last-minute charitable contribution -- was he breaking the rules of the boardroom battle or just bending them for a good cause? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

'No more hurting people.' Will a safer future follow Boston tragedy's wake?

Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy killed in the Boston Marathon bomb attack, once held a sign that said 'peace' and 'no more hurting people.' Research finds a pattern of lessening violence as human history moves forward.

Of all the images from the Boston Marathon tragedy that became suddenly iconic this week, none was more poignant than this: a photo showing how Martin Richard, the 8-year-old boy who died in the bomb attack, once held a sign that said ?peace? and ?no more hurting people.?

As a city and nation struggle to move forward, that sign implies one of the big questions that remains: What can be done to prevent such acts of senseless destruction in the future?

The search for answers will take time.

In the case of the explosions that rocked the Boston Marathon finish line on April 15, the suspects identified Thursday by the FBI have now been captured. Tamerlan Tsarnaev died in a gun battle with police, while his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is at a Boston hospital under tight security.

But their motive was still a matter of investigation Saturday.

Whatever ?is eventually determined ? whether the attacks stemmed from affiliation with some terrorist ideology or by something else ? officials in cities around the nation are now thinking harder about how to protect against such potential attacks, notably on ?soft targets? like an outdoor road race that are difficult to secure.

One answer, already, is stepped-up security measures by law enforcement.

From public events in America this weekend to the running of ?the London Marathon this Sunday, the presence of law enforcement is greater than it would have been had the Boston attack not occurred. But, although Boston in recent days has seen a dramatic ?surge? of police and National Guard troops, limited government budgets and the huge number of soft targets mean that such efforts are an imperfect defense.

Another part of the answer is public vigilance ? ordinary people being alert about behavior that raises doubts about the intentions or mental stability of acquaintances. Again, this is an imperfect defense.

Some people who knew 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in school said that he did normal activities like sports and parties. ?He was never a troublemaker,? one former teacher said.

The Boston case also coincides with growing public debate about three issues with big implications for prevention of violent crime and terrorism: Gun control, immigration reform, and civil liberties in an era of drones and databases of online information.

On firearms, this was a case where the alleged bombers used guns as well as explosives. One of four people killed in the bombing and its aftermath was an MIT campus police officer who was shot while in his car.

The Tsarnaev brothers exchanged gunfire with police during a chase and manhunt that ended Friday night.

This comes during a week when supporters of stronger background checks for gun purchases failed in a US Senate vote. The National Rifle Association and some others argue that Americans? safety can be enhanced through a greater presence of armed ?good guys,? including guards to prevent Newtown-style tragedies in schools. At the same time, many Americans want to see access to assault weapons restricted, and efforts to ensure that people with criminal records or diagnosed mental disorders can?t buy firearms.
