(AP) ? The mystery behind the most enigmatic smile in art ? Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" ? just got a little more complicated.

In a coming-out party of sorts in Geneva, rounds of flashbulbs popped Thursday as the nonprofit Mona Lisa Foundation pulled back the curtain to present what it claims is a predecessor of the world's most famous portrait.

But even the experts brought in by the foundation weren't sure about that claim just yet.

The art world is prone to all sorts of rumors and speculation ? and, periodically ? discoveries that jolt accepted norms. Two years ago, a retired French electrician claimed that he had turned up 271 Picasso works that had been sitting for decades in his garage ? and Picasso's heirs claimed theft.

But a new claim about the world's most famous painting, which draws millions of visitors to Paris' Louvre Museum each year, resonates like a thunderclap in the art world. It also prompts a new look at a painting that all by itself still raises a lot of questions for experts ? not least the timeless "Is she smiling or not?"

The "Isleworth Mona Lisa" features a dark-haired young woman with her arms crossed against a distant backdrop. The foundation insists it's no copy but an earlier version of the Louvre masterpiece.

At the presentation, Alessandro Vezzosi, director of the Museo Ideale Leonardo da Vinci, said the painting was intriguing but needs further study. He declined to line up behind the foundation's claims that it was truly a "Mona Lisa" predecessor painted by da Vinci.

Ever since the 16th century, several historical sources suggest that da Vinci painted two "Mona Lisa" versions. One was of Mona Lisa Gherardo around 1503 that was commissioned by her husband, Francesco del Giocondo, the foundation said. Another ? the one in the Louvre ? was completed in 1517 for Giuliano de Medici, da Vinci's patron. That theory fits with da Vinci's tendency at times to paint two versions of some of his works, like the Virgin of the Rocks, the group said.

Foundation members say it's unrealistic to think that the woman sat twice for a portrait, but that the meticulous, mathematical approach suggested that Da Vinci may have projected in his mind what she would have looked like between the first alleged "Mona Lisa" and the "Mona Lisa" in the Louvre.

However, the foundation acknowledged that the "Isleworth Mona Lisa" remains unfinished, and that da Vinci didn't paint all parts of the work. Still, the group pointed to newly discovered evidence in 2005 from Heidelberg, Germany, that suggested da Vinci was working on at least the head of such a painting in 1503.

The painting has been in headlines before, starting in the early 20th century. And it's not unknown to a foreign audience: It was shown in Japan last year before the foundation's research was finished.

Experts say Thursday's unveiling was designed to draw more attention and scrutiny from worldwide art experts about whether it's authentic: A start more than a finish.

The Isleworth painting first came to public light after British art collector Hugh Blaker found it in the home of a nobleman in Somerset, England before World War I, said Robert Meyrick, head of the art school at Wales' Aberystwyth University.

Blaker bought the painting and took it to his private studio in Isleworth outside London. U.S. and British newspapers, meanwhile, speculated even then that it might be a da Vinci. But at that time only art experts ? not high-tech science tests like the ones conducted by the foundation ? could judge its possible bona fides.

During World War II, Blaker shipped the painting to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts for safekeeping, the foundation said. In 1962, it was bought by U.S. collector Henry Pulitzer. When he died in 1979, his reported mistress ? Elisabeth Meyer ? inherited it, but it remained in a Swiss bank vault.

After she died, an "international consortium" ? which the foundation declined to identify ? bought the painting in 2008, according to the group's chronology. The foundation was set up two years later, determined to try to show that it was a real da Vinci.

The Mona Lisa Foundation's members are more from the business world than the art world. Participating in Thursday's show was David Feldman, an Irish-born stamp auctioneer; his brother Stanley, an art historian who was the main author of an extensive book on the "Isleworth Mona Lisa"; and Markus Frey, a lawyer in Zurich who is the foundation's president.

The foundation and its backers paid "several million" to conduct research tests ? forensic analysis, carbon-dating and computerized regression analysis ? on the work, Feldman said. He wouldn't say how much the painting was bought for in 2008.

Carlo Pedrotti, one of the world's most eminent scholars on da Vinci, hailed the foundation's "extraordinary contribution to scholarship."

In a letter to the foundation presented Thursday, Pedrotti called the group "precisely the sort of research institute, if not a veritable investigating agency ? an FBI for Leonardo studies! ? that I had always hoped for."

Martin Kemp, a da Vinci scholar and Oxford University professor, said he hadn't seen the painting but doubts that it is authentic. He cautioned that the foundation might have its judgment clouded by a possible payoff.

"If this were the original version of the most famous picture in the world, heaven knows what it would cost ? a lot of money," he told APTN in an interview at his home near Oxford. "You'd probably be on your way to 200 million pounds ($325 million) or to stratospheric realms."

"There are big, big stakes involved, and people become committed to it," he noted.

Still, who wouldn't want to have their own "Mona Lisa?"

"Having a Leonardo is a very sensational thing to have," Kemp admitted. "If I had a Leonardo, it would secure my fame forever."

Students Use Engineering to Work Toward Sustainable Future

(NewsUSA) ? Although the change is gradual, the U.S. is gaining ground on a more sustainable future. Energy experts and environmentalists can argue it?s not occurring fast enough, but from transportation to engineering, improvements are being made.

The Prius is Toyota?s third most popular car. Each year brings a new round of hybrid vehicles, making over 30 different hybrid cars at the start of 2012.

Eco-friendly building options are becoming more affordable, and alternative fuels are being put to use. For instance, Green Mountain College in Vermont operates off a biomass plant that heats the entire campus using green woodchips, a local, renewable and sustainable fuel source.

More city engineers are adding bike lanes and wider streets as commuter biking grows in popularity. In fact, each year the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) holds a Human Powered Vehicle Challenge where top engineering students design sleek pedal-powered vehicles capable of road use.

By creating new prototypes for a road-friendly, human-powered vehicle, these engineering students are working toward a sustainable world. Eventually, many engineers think further developments in human-powered vehicles could lead to a transportation alternative that will reduce the consumption of traditional fuels.

According to a comparison calculation by Business Insider using data from Copenhagen?s huge cycling community, we would add $46 million to the economy if the same number of Americans biked to work.

The coming generations of engineers have a large burden on their shoulders to compete in the global market and thrive in a technology-driven workforce. Plus, demand for high-tech, high-wage engineering jobs is only growing.

A study by Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce noted that 8 million American jobs will require a degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by 2018. For aerospace, agricultural, mechanical, civil and electrical engineers, environmental protection and preservation are central to the job.

With each year?s human powered vehicle competition, ASME is grooming the next generation of engineers to be innovative, socially conscious and forward-thinking. For more information, visit www.asme.org

Greek coalition has 'basic agreement' on austerity

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? After weeks of fruitless efforts, the heads of the three parties in Greece's governing coalition have struck a basic deal on a new round of harsh austerity measures required for the country to continue getting vital rescue loans, officials said Thursday.

Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras said the long-delayed agreement placed him in a stronger negotiating position ahead of talks Monday with representatives of the country's bailout creditors, who will have the final word on the cutbacks.

He said Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' deliberations with the heads of his two junior coalition partners resulted in "a basic agreement" on the measures intended to ax some ?11.5 billion ($14.8 billion) off state spending in 2013-14.

Under its bailout commitments, Athens must also boost state revenues by an additional ?2 billion over the next two years through tax reform and improved tax collection.

The three-party meeting came a day after more than 50,000 anti-austerity protesters took to the streets of Athens, in a demonstration marred by clashes between hooded anarchist youths and riot police.

Greece has relied on international bailouts since May 2010. In return, it imposed a punishing austerity program, repeatedly slashing incomes, hiking taxes and raising retirement ages. The new measures are expected to include further pension and salary cuts, and raising the age of retirement from 65 to 67.

Approval from European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank officials monitoring the country's three-year effort to right its finances will allow the disbursement of ?31 billion, expected after mid-October.

With that money, whose payment was delayed for months after two successive national elections in May and June, Greece will complete the recapitalization of its battered banking system and pay off long-outstanding debts to domestic suppliers.

Without the cash, the country would have trouble paying its bails. That could force Greece to default on its debts and, possibly, ditch the euro.

The conservative-led coalition has been debating the new cutbacks for about two months, but a deal was delayed by opposition from the two center-left junior partners ? coupled with disagreements with EU, IMF and ECB austerity inspectors.

Fotis Kouvelis, head of the small Democratic Left party, said after Thursday's two-and-a-half hour talks that, despite the overall agreement, "some issues are still outstanding."

And Socialist PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos said he would "struggle to the end to ensure that these measures are not across the board and are fair ... and that they are truly the last," as Samaras has pledged.

Vos Logistics Adds Five LNG Trucks to Its Fleet ... - LNG World News

Vos Logistics Adds Five LNG Trucks to Its Fleet

European logistics service provider Vos Logistics has further greened its transport fleet by taking five new trucks into service that drive on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In the fourth quarter of the year the company will add another six LNG trucks to its fleet, bringing the total number of Mercedes-Benz Econic LNG trucks to 14. LNG trucks can also be driven on LBG (liquefied biogas) and have a range of about 1,200 kilometres. They are therefore a sustainable alternative for use in national distribution such as deliveries to urban retailers.

Vos Logistics will use the LNG trucks for national distribution in the Netherlands, Belgium and western Germany. Vos Logistics has identified this segment as a strong growth market.

LNG as a sustainable alternative to diesel

Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) emits fewer harmful substances such as NOx, SOx, particulates and greenhouse gases. In comparison with diesel, Euro 5 trucks emit 30% less CO2 and as much as 85% fewer particulates. By using LNG trucks, Vos Logistics can operate in full compliance with its customers? sustainability policies.

For Frank Verhoeven, CEO of Vos Logistics, driving on LNG is one of the alternatives available to further reduce the emission of CO2. ?In the first half of the year, we cut our CO2 emissions by a further 3%, thanks in part to the use of LNG trucks. More importantly, our customers are expecting us to deliver sustainability. A good example is floor covering manufacturer Desso. It has adopted the Cradle to Cradle? principle, in which products are made from materials that are safe for human use and can be biologically and technically re-used at the end of their lives.

?At the same time, it uses production processes that guarantee sustainable energy consumption, water savings and eco-effectiveness. The company also works closely with suppliers who respect the same principles. Desso has therefore decided to use LNG trucks to distribute its products because they strengthen its sustainability policy.?

Rebels strike Syrian power center with car bombs

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian rebels struck deep in the fortress-like inner sanctum of President Bashar Assad's rule Wednesday in Damascus, detonating two car bombs that engulfed the army headquarters in flames.

The suicide bombings and subsequent gun battles in the Syrian capital killed at least five people, including a reporter for Iranian TV. The carefully orchestrated attacks highlighted the regime's growing vulnerability, even as the 18-month battle to bring down Assad is locked in a stalemate.

International diplomacy has failed to stop the bloodshed.

Making his debut on the global stage at the United Nations, Egypt's new President Mohammed Morsi said he will not rest until Syria's civil war is brought to an end. He called it the "tragedy of the age" and one that "we all must end."

Morsi has launched an "Islamic Quartet" of regional powers to seek an end to the violence, but he has not offered a specific plan of action.

The explosions targeting the Syrian military compound went off about 10 minutes apart, around 7 a.m., with the first blast possibly meant to create a diversion to enable the second attacker to get into the compound.

Security camera footage aired by Syrian state TV showed a white van driving on a busy thoroughfare outside the military compound, then veering to the right and exploding. The footage showed a second blast going off inside the complex, with flames rising up behind trees.

After the second explosion, rebel fighters and regime forces exchanged fire for more than three hours, including inside the military compound, said Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group. The fighting spilled over into nearby Omayyad Square, with regime troops ? some wildly firing in the air ? chasing after rebel gunmen, witnesses said.

Syrian state TV reported that four army guards were killed and 14 people were wounded, including civilians and military personnel.

The Iranian English language Press TV said one of its Syrian correspondents, 33-year-old Maya Nasser, was killed by a rebel sniper following the blast. The station replayed Nasser's last report, in which he was on the phone from Damascus during a live broadcast, when the line suddenly went silent. The Damascus bureau chief for Press TV, Hosein Mortada, was wounded in the clashes.

Abdul-Rahman said the regime was underreporting casualties in an attempt to play down the severity of the attacks.

Fear spread among residents of the nearby Malki area, an upscale district that has largely been sheltered from the battles that usually rage in the city's impoverished belt of suburbs.

"It is obvious that there are no more safe areas in Syria," said Hala, a 28-year-old resident who only gave her first name for fear of repercussions. "We are all under fire."

Rebels have targeted the center of Damascus with bomb attacks in the past, most dramatically in July when they detonated explosives inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

However, predictions that such attacks could accelerate the regime's demise have proven premature, and both sides have dug in, each unable to deliver a knockout blow.

The two sides are deadlocked in the northern battle for Aleppo, Syria's largest city. In the western slice of Syria that is most heavily populated, rebels control large swaths of the countryside, while the regime is clinging to urban centers.

Fighting has accelerated over the summer, and the Observatory said the death toll has broken the 30,000 mark, with nearly two-thirds of the casualties reported in the past six months.

The number of people killed rose from about 11,000 by mid-April to 30,109 people as of Wednesday, said the Observatory. Of those, more than two-thirds ? or 21,594 ? were either civilians who did not take part in the fighting or took up arms to topple the regime. In addition, 7,345 regime soldiers were killed, along with 1,170 army defectors fighting on the side of rebels, he said.

The Observatory, which compiles information from a network of activists in Syria, says it only includes named victims in its count or those whose death was verified by other means, such as amateur video.

Wednesday's blasts, while potentially demoralizing for the regime, won't likely shift the momentum in the rebels' favor, analysts said.

"The rebels are able to penetrate here and there and catch the regime off guard," said Paul Salem of the Carnegie Middle East Center, a Beirut-based think tank. "It's an important event, but does not change ... the balance of power, which is right now in a deadly stalemate."

In Damascus, Syrian Information Minister Omran Zoubi played down the significance of the attacks. "Everything is normal," he told Syrian state TV. "There was a terrorist act, perhaps near a significant location, yes, this is true, but they failed as usual to achieve their goals."

Yet for several hours Wednesday, rebels were able to create fear and confusion in the heart of the capital. The explosions set off a huge blaze that engulfed the military complex in flames and sent columns of thick black smoke over Damascus for several hours.

The blasts shattered windows of the Dama Rose hotel and other nearby buildings, as well as windshields of parked cars. Footage by another state-run TV channel, Ikhbariya, showed heavy damage inside the compound, with glass shards scattered across the floor and broken ceiling tiles.

Witnesses reported heavy gunfire for hours near Omayyad Square and the military compound. One witness reported seeing panicked soldiers shooting in the air randomly as they ran. A group of army soldiers standing outside the buildings shouted pro Assad slogans, including: "Shabiha, forever, for your eyes, Oh Assad!" in reference to pro-regime militiamen.

The Syrian army said "terrorists" ? a term the regime routinely uses for the rebels ? in the area opened random fire at the same time as the bombings to scare people. The army said authorities were pursuing the gunmen.

The rebels' Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility for the attacks, which came just a day after a Damascus school used by regime forces, according to activists, was bombed Tuesday, wounding several people.

Damascus has been targeted repeatedly by the rebels. Previous bombings raised concerns that the al-Qaida terror network is becoming increasingly active in Syria. Jebhat al-Nusra, an extremist Syrian group, claimed responsibility for many of them.

Also Wednesday, the Observatory and another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, said dozens of bodies were found in the southern Damascus suburb of Thiyabiyeh. The reports could not be independently confirmed because of strict restrictions on foreign media.

The Observatory said 40 bodies, including some of women and children, were discovered, but it was not clear under which circumstances the victims were killed.

Another group of activists, the Local Coordination Committees, said 107 bodies were found, including women and children killed execution-style. It said the dead included nine members of the Al-Rifaie family whose throats were slit.

An amateur video, which could not be verified, showed the bodies of 18 men lined up on the floor of a room, some of them with marks of deep wounds.

Dating & Relationships: Oh You've Got Games?

Games, we?ve been playing them since we were children and as adults we still play these games. ?Except as adults are games have become interestingly complex. ?Mommy?s pissed at daddy, she ignores him. ?Mommy spent too much money on shoe shopping, daddy yells and then spaces out into countless hours of football watching. ?Singles, well it becomes even trickier. ?You dance with the guy at the bar, just to make the guy you really want jealous? ?What?

A 5 year old would say, ?Well mommy & daddy just say you?re sorry like you tell me to do.? ?A 10 year old would tell the Single, ?Duh if you like the boy then just tell him.. Sheesh!? ?To children it?s probably common sense what we should do, but we as adults assure ourselves that these complex games are the proper antidote.

Someone recently asked me to write about ?Where games stop and true unconditional love commitment begins?.? ?Face it, to some degree we all play games, but I?m convinced we can all agree that the games are tiresome and often produce very fickle results. ?So why do we play these games? ?Why don?t we just talk it out, why not communicate how we feel?

We get hurt, we?re afraid of rejection, we sometimes feel so trapped we?re not sure how to communicate anymore, our anger gets the best of us so we don?t dare give our hearts a chance to speak and so the list goes on. ?I love being transparent, I love sharing how I feel, I often feel like it?s too much. ?In my dream world I would freely be able to communicate all that my heart feels. ?Reality is it?s not always the best idea, especially when someone doesn?t know how to handle it or when they?re not a safe person to do so with.

The truth is we have to remain vulnerable in this journey of love. ?When we find ourselves in situations where we feel compelled to constantly play games we must re-think where we are and if we want to stay in that position. ?Unconditional love takes its place where there is safety, where there is courage to break away from the lies and when we fight to remain true to our hearts.

Though we may all continue to play games for the sake of ?self preservation?, there?s a fine line when playing games becomes our way of existence in dating & relationships. ?For me I prefer truth. ?Sure tease me with the chase, I get it, but ultimately I want truth, I want substance, I want real love. ?Oh you?ve got games? ?Consider exchanging the game pieces for love, honesty and genuine emotions.

ACLU Asks Supreme Court to Invalidate Gene Patents ...

By Sam Favate

The American Civil Liberties Union, along with the Public Patent Foundation, again asked the Supreme Court to invalidate patents for two genes that are associated with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, saying the patents restrict scientific research and access to medical care.

A 2010 ruling from a New York?federal district court invalidated all of the challenged patents, which are held by Myriad Genetics Inc . and the University of Utah Research Foundation. In July 2011, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said companies can obtain patents?on genes, but not the methods for comparing gene sequences.

Earlier this year, in March, the Supreme Court vacated the appeals court?s ruling and instructed that the case be reconsidered in light of its ruling in?Mayo Collaborative Services v. Prometheus Laboratories, which invalidated patents on methods for evaluating a patient?s response to a drug.?In response,?the appeals court ruled last month that companies can obtain patents on the genes.

?In our view, the court of appeals did not fully consider or correctly apply the Supreme Court?s most recent and relevant patent law decisions,? said Chris Hansen, a staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology Project. ?DNA occurs naturally in the human body and cannot be patented by a single company that can then use its patents to limit scientific research and the free exchange of ideas.?

The patents give Myriad the exclusive right to perform tests on the two genes in question. Women with some genetic mutations are believed to have up to an 85% chance of developing breast cancer and a 50% risk for ovarian cancer, according to Sandra Park of the ACLU Women?s Rights Project, in a blog posting. The patents essentially mean that laboratories around the country can?t provide genetic testing of those genes without permission of the patent holders.

The Supreme Court is likely to give Myriad a chance to respond before making a decision on whether to hear the case. Owners of patents have in the past said that research efforts could be hampered without legal protection for the work that went into discovering the genes, the Baltimore Sun noted.

?There?s a real crying need for clarification about patent law and intellectual property related to genomics,? Jeffrey Kahn, professor of bioethics and public policy at Johns Hopkins University, told the Sun.

A spokeswoman for Myriad wasn?t immediately available for comment.

Netflix iOS and Android apps have a remote control easter egg for PS3 owners

Now that the revamped Netflix interface has hit phones and tablets for both Apple and Android powered hardware, the service has quietly enabled something else: second screen remote control. Currently the feature is only known to work on the PlayStation 3 with a mobile device on the same local network, once the two apps are running you can browse as normal on your phone or tablet and when you go to play a movie or TV show it asks you to choose where it will play. While the video is playing you can stop, pause or seek through it to a certain point, change the audio or subtitles, choose a different episode or even browse for something entirely different without stopping the action. Speak of the Devil: A Day In The Life Of A Cat

"If you hold a cat by the tail, you learn things you cannot learn any other way." ~ Mark Twain

"Cats were put into the world to disprove the dogma that all things were created to serve man." ~ Paul Gray

"A catless writer is almost inconceivable. It's a perverse taste, really, since it would be easier to write with?a herd of buffalo in the room than even one cat; they make nests in the notes and bite the end of the pen and walk on the typewriter keys." ~ Barbara Holland

7:10 AM. Awake, unexpectedly. Hearing the sound of distant machinery. This will not do. This will not do at all. I demand my sleep not be disturbed until I'm ready to wake up.

7:12 AM. Have determined source of sound. Spotting machinery out on road. Apparently those lowly humans are engaged in resurfacing the road with those big loud noisy things.

They had better not be doing this all day. Or I will have words with them.

7:15 AM. Sleep is impossible, now that the noise patrol is going on outside. Honestly, what kind of hour is this for anyone to be out and about? Well, if I have to be awake, my staff had better wake up. If she isn't already...

7:17 AM. Have found staff in bed, refusing to stir. Staff has pillow curled around her head, as if to block out the noise outside. Understandable, staff, but I require nourishment. Right now.

7:18 AM. Pouncing up on bed. Walking back and forth on top of staff. Wake up, staff. See to my needs, post haste. Then go have a word with that work crew outside. They rudely interrupted my sleep. And yes, I know I'm being two faced by saying they're rude and then waking you up. There is a difference. I'm a cat, and you work for me. Therefore I have every right to wake you up whenever I please.

7:20 AM. Staff grumbles and growls. Oh please. We cats have perfected the arts of grumbling and growling.

7:21 AM. Staff finally sits up, mutters something about wishing it was Saturday. Staff, you have ten minutes to come downstairs and feed me. And it had better not be any of those field rations. You and I both know I don't like field rations.

7:29 AM. Back downstairs waiting in kitchen. Hearing staff upstairs. Time's running out. I was far more generous than I could have been, giving her ten minutes to get downstairs, and nary a trace of her...

7:32 AM. Staff finally emerges into kitchen to feed me. The fact that she's reaching for the field rations does not leave me hopeful. Staff, I thought we had an understanding.

7:34 AM. Staff places bowl of field rations down on floor near me. Glare at her with disdain. Staff, this is going on your performance evaluations, you realize?

7:36 AM. Reluctantly beginning to eat field rations. Far too dry and lacking in taste. I would vastly prefer high grade salmon and caviar.

7:55 AM. Staff on her way out the door. Bids me goodbye for the day. Staff? Wait, what about my right to go in and out as I please all day long? Staff?

Staff has closed the door behind her. I'm stuck.

This is definitely going on her performance evaluations...

7:56 AM. Watching staff pull out of driveway in car. Work crew still out on road making noise. Wondering if I can call the?county to complain about the noise.

8:25 AM. Work crew slowly grading road. Instead of gravel, you morons could just pave the road. Wondering if that would make more noise or less. Pacing back and forth on windowsill, wondering when they'll get finished.

8:45 AM. That's enough. Time to call the county and have them shut this operation down. It's going to cut into my nap time.

8:46 AM. Have called county officials to file formal complaints. Stymied by their inability to understand cat. Will not lower myself to speak English.

9:35 AM. Work crew sounds are more distant. Down the road now. Hopefully they won't come back, but that noise thoroughly disrupts my daily routine of naps, naps, and more naps. Must write a letter to the editor.

10:45 AM. Finally the machines are distant enough not to annoy me.?Time for naps. It would be ideal if I could be napping whereever would be most inconvenient for the staff, but she's off at that place she calls work.

12:45 PM. Waking up from nap. Needed the rest. Time to stroll about. Perhaps force myself to eat some more of those field rations. Not much of a choice, really. A cat has to eat....

12:57 PM. Finished eating field rations. Even less impressive after a few hours in the bowl than they were this morning. Staff, you and I will have to have a long talk about the quality of my meals, or I will just have to find myself a new staff member.

1:15 PM. Wandering through house. Have stopped by scratching post. Must attack scratching post. Can't help myself. It's in my nature.

1:30 PM. Have finished assaulting scratching post. Still lingering scent of catnip on it. Ah, catnip. There is surely nothing in the world more exquisite. Or more addicting.

1:35 PM. Attacking the scratching post has made me a little sleepy. Nap time.

2:55 PM. Waking up again. Oh, come on, staff, where are you?

3:10 PM. Wandering house. Have found ball of string in upstairs guest room.

Can't resist it... it's calling out to me. I must have it.

3:11 PM. Have given in to urge to attack the ball of string.

4:05 PM. Finally finished unspooling ball of string in epic run around the house. Feeling sleepy. Might take a nap.

5:10 PM. Waking up again. Puzzled by presence of string all over the place.

Oh, right.

I did that.

5:15 PM. Following string along. How did I manage to get it between all of the staircase pillars like that?

5:20 PM. Confused by how the string is now wrapped around the piano. I must have been moving fast. These things happen... I get so obsessed with the string that I don't watch what I'm doing...

5:30 PM. Okay, let me see if I've got this straight... I got the string fed through the telephone casing? How is that possible? Did I violate basic laws of physics?

5:35 PM. I'm starting to think the staff won't be impressed by what I did to the ball of string.?It's everywhere.

5:48 PM. Practise patented innocent look. The one that says, That was like that when I woke up. Don't ask me who did this...

5:55 PM. On the other hand, the argument could be made that it's the fault of the staff. She left a ball of string out in the open, knowing what I might do. Yes, it's her fault.

6:05 PM. Hearing the sound of a car door outside. Scrambling up onto windowsill. Ah, there's the staff. Coming up the walk to the front door.

Let's see, Patented Innocent look, or Blame It On Her? Which should I use?

6:06 PM. Staff opens front door and sees first of the string wound around the doorknob and into the living room. I casually saunter into the hall.

Oh, come on, you're the one who left the string upstairs, and me all by my lonesome for hours on end....

6:07 PM. Staff mutters about wondering why she didn't just get a dog. Staff, we've been through this before. Dogs are silly and foolish creatures. You require a cat. I keep you in your rightful place. Namely under my paw.

6:08 PM. Staff begins long process of dealing with string I've run all over the house. Yes, well, if you left the door open?so I could go in and out at my?leisure as I please all day,?we wouldn't have this problem, would we?

I'd have wound the string around the picnic table and the barbecue.??

7:15 PM. Staff finally finished dealing with the string. She looks at me with a shake of the head and a roll of her eyes. I respond by rubbing my head against her legs and purring.

She melts. Works every single time.

7:25 PM. Staff begins preparing dinner. Staff, I'm assuming better cuisine is in store for me tonight?

7:30 PM. Staff puts down standard field rations and the generic canned meat. Staff, this is not what I meant by better cuisine.

7:45 PM. Have reluctantly finished off evening meal. Will watch staff closely as she prepares her own meal. I smell something distinctly of chicken origins. With those seasonings she uses.

8:10 PM. Staff has finished making her meal. Must sit nearby in kitchen and stare. And then stare some more.

8:15 PM. Staff relents and sets out an additional plate, then puts meat on it, and puts it down on the floor. Taking a sniff. Chicken Parmigiana. Now this is more like it!

8:20 PM. Happily satisfied by extra meal of delicious chicken parmigiana. Staff, this will reflect very well in your performance evaluations.

8:35 PM. Staff finishing up with dishes. Heading into living room. Time to watch a bit of television.

8:40 PM. Political debates. No thank you. They don't talk about what's truly important in the world.

The price of catnip.

8:45 PM. No, not a reality show. No one cares about a sleazy bachelor anyway. Where are the shows that feature attacks on squirrels by cats? That would be Must See TV.

8:50 PM. Staff comes in and takes the remote without asking. Staff, that's not nice.

Staff settles in for a Matthew McConaughey movie. Oh, come on, staff. We've discussed this before. The man looks like he's been hit by too many baseballs. That goofy grin of his is the sort of thing you'd see on a dog.

9:10 PM. Staff persists in watching Matthew McConaughey flirt with hapless Kate Hudson. Why do they make so many movies together? Isn't that cruel and unusual punishment? Where's a Siberian Tiger wandering into the middle of the story for no reason when you really need one?

9:20 PM. Oh, well, at least this movie doesn't feature the Aniston Demon. I have no idea why that woman is famous... I really don't.

9:45 PM. Of course. The misunderstanding between Matthew and Kate that will inevitably lead them to a happy ending regardless. It happens in all of these movies. Makes you want to smack the screenwriter.

I still say he grins like a dog.

And that's not a compliment.

10:15 PM. Credits rolling. Staff bawling. She always gets this way watching those movies. Come on, staff, these films don't rate as tearjerkers.

Humans. Can't figure them out. Never will....

10:20 PM. Staff shuts off television for the night. Staff remarks that she loves those films. Staff, we're going to have to get you a better quality of film to watch. Try The Ghost And The Darkness. I always root for the lions, even though I know the end of the movie.

10:45 PM. Staff gives me a late evening bowl of milk. Very good, staff, there's hope for you yet.

10:55 PM. Staff picks me up for cuddles. Will put up with it. I figure I should let her, what with the whole ball of string all over the house thing I did today....

11:35 PM. Staff brings me up to bed for the night. I purr away. For some reason cuddles do that to me.

Don't tell anyone I said that. I have a reputation to maintain.

Sikorsky to close upstate NY plant, cut 570 jobs

BIG FLATS, N.Y. (AP) ? Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., citing declining military budgets and a tough economy, said it will close its plant in upstate New York and eliminate all 570 jobs.

Employees at the 5-year-old facility, who have seen their ranks dwindle from a peak of 1,300, were told Monday that the plant would close as of Dec. 31 and its work transitioned to Sikorsky's West Palm Beach, Fla., facility.

"Faced with these difficult economic conditions we must eliminate excess production capacity and increase operational efficiencies to remain competitive," said Paul Jackson, spokesman for the Stratford, Conn.-based subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.

The helicopter maker and military contractor announced in September 2011 that it was trimming its worldwide workforce of 18,000 by about 540 jobs. Jackson cited "moderating growth" in the U.S. and international economies and the impact on commercial and military customers.

The Military Completion Center in Chemung County customizes military helicopters sold to foreign governments. Sikorsky bought the plant from Schweizer Aircraft Corp. in 2004. Three years later, the company opened a new $15 million, 100,000-square-foot facility near the Elmira Corning Regional Airport.

Sikorsky also has large-scale operations in Connecticut, Florida, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin, as well as Poland.

Sikorsky posted $1.62 billion in net sales for the second quarter of 2012, down 9 percent from the same period in 2011. Its signature Black Hawk has been a workhorse for the U.S. military to strike targets and ferry troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sales at Sikorsky have more than doubled to $6.7 billion since 2005.

Vogue publisher to open cafe outpost in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ? Vogue's fashion-loving fans will soon have a chance to drink in the magazine's aura at a new cafe in Dubai.

The glossy's global publisher, Conde Nast International, said Tuesday that it expects to open the Vogue Cafe in the glitzy Gulf emirate's largest shopping mall by the end of the year.

It will be the company's first such cafe in the Middle East, where luxury fashion labels such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Chanel are extremely popular among the region's well-heeled shoppers.

"The expatriate community and the local Emirati community are very conscious of brands," said Stuart Nielsen, director of Conde Nast's restaurant division. "People always love to eat and drink, and we see an opportunity because they love fashion."

Vogue will join a fast-growing list of American brands expanding their reach to Dubai, a cosmopolitan city-state in the Persian Gulf and trade a hub where guest workers from around the world far outnumber citizens. The emirate is home to the only Bloomingdale's department store outside the United States, and recently received its first branches of IHOP and the Cheesecake Factory.

The cafe will be surrounded by high-end fashion and shoe stores in Dubai Mall.

The sprawling shopping center is located at the foot of the world's tallest skyscraper, the 2,717 foot-tall (828 meter) Burj Khalifa, which is already home to a swanky hotel and several restaurants designed by Giorgio Armani. There is also a cafe, linked to the Italian designer inside the mall.

Contemporary European food will be on the Vogue Cafe menu, but no alcohol will be served, Nielsen said.

However, cocktails and other alcoholic beverages, will be available at another Conde Nast outlet designed to cater to male fans of its magazines. The publisher expects to open a bar based around GQ magazine in one of Dubai's high-end hotels next year.

English-language versions of both magazines are available in the Middle East, though Conde Nast does not publish local versions of either.

The publisher is partnering with a Dubai-based firm called Inspired Group on the cafe and the bar. Nielsen declined to discuss the financial terms of the partnership.

Conde Nast opened a similar cafe in Moscow in 2004. It has since opened two other establishments tied to its brands in the Russian capital.

The company is planning to open another GQ Bar in Istanbul this year, and has signed deals for Conde Nast establishments in Bangkok and Singapore, Nielsen said. It is also considering opening cafes in Mideast cities closer to Dubai, including Kuwait City and the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.

Besides Vogue and GQ, Conde Nast's titles include The New Yorker, Wired and Vanity Fair.

Conde Nast International, which publishes international versions of the American magazines, set up its restaurant division in 2010. It publishes more than 120 magazines in 24 international markets.

Time for an internal spring clean! - ARTEMIS Therapeutic Natural ...

Spring provides a wonderful array of cleansing herbs and vegetables, ideal to incorporate into your Spring detox for an internal cleanse.

?

?

Carrying some stubborn extra winter weight?

Constantly feeling sluggish and tired?

Is your skin looking dull?

Are you struggling to get up in the morning?

?

Be proactive and look after your most valuable asset, your health.?

The human body is amazing and can adapt and work under extreme pressure. However, we need to look after it so that it can provide us with the best possible health in return. ?Regular detoxification is essential for a strong body and a clear mind.? Despite common belief, many of the one-off detox packs have very little long term health benefits. ?It is actually the daily cleansing and nurturing that supports your body to function at its highest possible level. ?In turn, this enables you to enjoy your life at the fullest.

?

Spring provides?a wonderful array of cleansing herbs and vegetables that enables your body to get rid of sluggishness, excess weight and fluid (oedema) that commonly accumulate over winter. ?Traditionally all cultures?practiced spring cleansing as a way to rejuvenate themselves. ?Fresh vegetable juices and Tea Remedies are particularly suited for detoxification as they deliver ? apart from their cleansing nutrients ? also the necessary amount of liquid to flush the body. These nutrient rich, cleansing drinks are superbly bio-available and unfold their benefits immediately. This is because they are absorbed straight into the blood stream and do not need to be processed by the liver first, as is the case with tablets.? Removing impurities and unwanted waste will help restore balance and vitality leaving you looking and feeling rejuvenated.

?

?

For a detox that works you need to observe 3 principles:

1)???? provide specific nutrients to your detoxification organs liver and kidneys

2)???? eat cleansing foods and abstain from those which are processed and taxing

3)???? move your body

?

Why you need to nurture your liver

Taking a shower is a normal part of our daily routine, but have you ever thought of taking an ?internal shower??

Your liver is the gateway to health, vitality and beauty. ?The liver is a key organ within the human body and is nothing short of a miracle. ?It acts as ?purification plant? and a manufacturing and storage organ for nutrients and vitamins. ?A well functioning liver eliminates metabolic wastes, environmental toxins, drug residues, viruses, bacteria and excess hormones. ?An overloaded liver can manifest many unpleasant symptoms such as weight gain, constipation and /or diarrhea, inability to digest fatty foods, high cholesterol, bad breath, a yellowish looking, impure or itchy skin, hormonal imbalances, lack of concentration, depression, irritability, headaches, and waking between midnight and 3am. ?Ongoing tiredness is called the ?silent pain of the liver?. If liver detoxification is suboptimal the body also becomes over time susceptible to common degenerative diseases such as arthritis, skin conditions, autoimmune illnesses and cancer.

?

Why you need to daily cleanse your kidneys

Taking a shower is a normal part of our daily cleansing ritual, but have you ever thought of taking an internal shower? ?The kidneys are an important partner to the liver as they flush toxins made water-soluble by the liver. ?When the kidneys are working well this is reflected in a healthy urinary, sexual and reproductive system, a pure skin and supple, flexible joints. ?Kidney specific herbs help to detoxify and decongest the body. With their alkalising properties they further help to flush out uric acid and metabolic wastes often encountered in conditions such as allergies, eczema, arthritis and gout.

?

Why you need to move and nourish your body

We are made to move! Fresh air and exercise is essential for good health.

Beauty, radiance and vitality are linked directly with fitness and a good diet. You are meant to move! ?Fresh air and exercise are essential for good health. ?Exercise promotes essential detoxification, improves the metabolism and burns calories. ?Even a moderate level of exercise promotes circulation, oxygenation and lymphatic clearance to improve digestion, immunity, sleep and bone health. ?As a bonus, it also reduces stress levels.

?

When you have a sedentary lifestyle (i.e. when you don?t move very much) not only will you gradually gain fat that becomes difficult to shift with age, you will also loose muscle tone which is linked with youth and vitality. ?Therefore, if you get your heart rate up and even go so far as to break a sweat (just a little one) every day then this will get your heart pumping, boost metabolism, increase circulation, improve your mood, build muscle and burn fat.

?

Our body thrives best on a diet of organic vegetable and fruits, high quality plant proteins and organic meats.

Furthermore, your body thrives best on a diet of organic vegetables and fruits (a minimum of five serves a day), high quality plant proteins and low levels of organic meats. ?It is clinically proven that a diet high in sugar, saturated fat and processed foods will cause a lack of antioxidant protection, promote inflammation and poor health. ?Hormones and antibiotics in conventionally farmed pork, beef, chicken and milk combined with pesticides and herbicides from non-organic fruits and vegetables add to a high toxic load. ?Spring is a good time to rethink what you eat and incorporate those nourishing, fresh and vitalizing foods into your meals. ?Include vegetables like garlic, onions, broccoli, cabbage, radishes, mushrooms and asparagus as they help remove toxins from the blood stream. ?Make sure you include generous amounts of greens, as they are high in B vitamins and minerals.

?

?

?

?

A daily detox is the easiest and most effective way to give your body what it needs to feel the best that it can.? The best way to do this is by incorporating the certified organic ARTEMIS Detox Tea Remedies into your routine. ?Add exercise and healthy diet to this winning mix and you will be amazed how great you feel and how much energy you have!

?

Detoxify your Liver

The ARTEMIS Liver Detox Tea supports your liver to eliminate toxins, boost your metabolism, reduce cholesterol and assist in weight loss and constipation.?ARTEMIS Liver Detox Tea

a)??? For a full spring detox take three times per day before each main meal for a period of 3-6 weeks.

b)??? For optimal health continue to use the Liver Detox Tea once a day before breakfast as a daily health enhancing ritual for the rest of the year. ?For best results take in conjunction with the Kidney Cleanse Tea.

?Note: This tea may taste bitter at first. In fact, the more bitter you find it the more you need it. Persevere, as your liver improves, so will the taste! For beginners, make the tea weak (brew for 3-4 minutes). If needed, add a small amount of honey.

?

Cleanse your Kidneys

The ARTEMIS Kidney Cleanse Tea helps to flush toxins and urinary irritants, clears and prevents kidney and bladder infections, is useful in the treatment and prevention of gout as an alkalising remedy and helps to restore ARTEMIS Kidney Cleanse Teaclear skin.

a)??? For a full spring detox take three times per day in between meals for a period of 3-6 weeks.

b)??? Continue to use the Kidney Cleanse Tea once a day for morning tea as a daily ?internal shower? for the rest of the year. Regular flushing leads to rejuvenated inner health and glowing clear skin.

?

If weight and energy is an issue, enjoy the ARTEMIS Repower Green Tea in the afternoon. ?Drinking green tea will not only increase hydration and give you an antioxidant boost, it has been associated with increased weight loss (when trying to lose weight) and better maintenance (in healthy weight people). ?A delicious way to keep on top of your weight!

How To Measure for a President

It?s hard to say what the Founding Fathers would think of the modern presidency. But there?s no doubt they?d be horrified by the modern presidential campaign. In their day, no man worthy of the presidency would ever stoop to campaigning for it. George Washington was asked to serve. Decades later his successors were also expected to sit by the phone. "The Presidency is not an office to be either solicited or declined," wrote Rep. William Lowndes of South Carolina in 1821. Rutherford B. Hayes wanted to be so free of the taint of self-interest he didn?t even vote for himself in the election of 1876. As late as 1916, President Woodrow Wilson called campaigning "a great interruption to the rational consideration of public questions.?

Mitt Romney, right, and Paul Ryan, left, speak to an overflow crowd during a campaign rally at Randolph Macon College in August in Ashland, Virginia. Mitt Romney, right, and running mate Paul Ryan speak to a crowd at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Va.,?in August. What are the best ways to size up our presidential candidates?

Not so today. Mitt Romney has been running for president for six years. Barack Obama has arguably never stopped since he took the oath of office. Today campaigning isn?t an ?interruption? but a permanent condition. Indeed, if you are a successful campaigner it?s expected you?ll be a successful president. In 1992, after Bill Clinton beat George Bush, Dan Quayle said, "If he governs as well as he campaigned, the country will be all right." Republicans had argued Clinton's character faults disqualified him from office. Quayle was articulating the common modern view?ratified by voters?that being a gifted campaigner was the more important quality. When Barack Obama was asked about his lack of executive experience in 2008, he pointed to his successful campaign as proof he could manage the presidency. Bill Clinton testified on his behalf: ?If you have any doubt about Senator Obama's ability to be the chief executive,"?Clinton said at one of Obama?s vast rallies in October 2008, "just look at all of you. ... He has executed this campaign.?

There are similarities between the campaign and the presidency. Both tasks require a candidate to perform well under pressure, communicate effectively, and build a team that trusts you and can function with little sleep and lots of stress. Obama political adviser David Axelrod says the crucible of the campaign uncovers the hidden personal qualities that you can?t list on a r?sum?. "It's an MRI for the soul," he says.

But if good campaigners made good presidents, we'd have a constant string of successes. Most sitting presidents, almost by definition, have been skilled on the campaign trail. Yet the talents do not necessarily convey. Lyndon Johnson crushed Barry Goldwater in 1964 in part because of his attention to the minutia of the contest. He carried a laminated card in his pocket of the key polls in each battleground state, but Vietnam was beyond his ability to micromanage. Nixon and his men brought modern public relations techniques to the presidency in 1968. As president, he trampled on the office. In 1974, Jimmy Carter was such a political unknown that no one on the game show What's My Line recognized him. Two years later he was president. Wise men considered Carter?s meteoric rise proof that he was a political genius. Maybe he was. But he was also one of our least effective presidents.

Campaigns reward fighters. Governing requires cooperation, compromise, and negotiation. Campaigns focus on one opponent, but a president, even if he wants to go on the attack, never has just one jaw to swing at. President Obama must attack the Republican Congress?John Boehner one day, Paul Ryan the next. It was easier to slug John McCain again and again.

Presidential campaigns are fantastical places. Here, on the campaign stump, the United States can be ruthless with China diplomatically?but not beholden to Beijing as creditors. Entitlements are always safe?even as the deficit is drastically cut. Candidates build an electoral coalition by papering over differences and offending no one. Then, as president, they are forced to make choices which almost always offend some wing of the coalition they built.

When voters evaluate a candidate?s character, they tend to be Manichean: Candidates are only one thing or its opposite. A candidate is either a leader or a ponderous professor, a man of the people or an elitist, the real deal or a phony. One-dimensional characterizations makes for easy political attacks and self-satisfaction among those who simply want to affirm their existing ideologies. It is the laziness underpinning much talk radio, but it misses the essential paradox of the presidency: presidents move between both ends of a spectrum.

The cheap political critique of Mitt Romney is that he flip-flops. His opponents point this out as if that?s all you need to know to disqualify him. But malleability is a necessary quality in a president. (Constancy has a nice romantic ring to it, but does anyone want a leader who sets a course and then refuses to change it no matter what?) It?s more fruitful to examine the specific cases where Romney showed flexibility, compare them with cases when President Obama changed his position, and then decide which candidate acted out of a lack of conviction and which was simply light on his feet.

President Obama shares a beer with Suzanne Woods, right, and Jennifer Klanac. President Obama shares a beer with Jennifer Klanac, left, and Suzanne Woods at Ziggy's Pub and Restaurant in Amherst, Ohio, in July during an unannounced visit while on a bus tour.

You can test presidential candidates by measuring them against the current occupant. Or you can hold them up against an idealized version and see how they do. It?s probably fairest to match their promises with their skills. Mitt Romney promises to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with an alternative. For those who hate Obamacare, that?s all they need to hear. But simply asking ?How?? puts us in a better position to evaluate his theoretical presidency. He?ll need a majority in Congress if he wants to follow through on this promise. The Democrats might still control the Senate. That means Romney will need considerable skill working with the other party to get what he wants. What experience in his background gives us confidence that he'll have the tools for the job he assigns himself? He?ll also be facing the ?fiscal cliff??an immediate bewildering thicket of tax cuts and spending reductions. How will he manage that and take on repealing health care? Isn?t one of these more important than the other? That raises questions about his priorities and how he sets them. Is he a pragmatist? Or is he an ideologue? Does he have the perseverance to handle both jobs? Would any president?

Maybe there is a better way to evaluate our presidential candidates, and come to more reliable conclusions about which ones are likely to have the skills actually required for the job.

Al Gore once suggested that running for president was like a job interview. But suppose the current presidential campaign were an extended job interview, conducted by the American people. Candidates are so guarded, the hiring committee would have little to go on. He speaks a great deal but says so little. All I really know is that he loves this company and thinks its best days are ahead of it. He thinks the head office in D.C. is out of touch with customers. Great teeth. No applicant would ever get a job giving the vague answers our candidates do.

The usual proposed remedy for the sorry state of our presidential campaigns is more focus on the issues. That?s important in order to learn what a candidate believes, to see if he can set priorities, and to judge whether he has the candor to say it out loud. But it?s not enough for a president merely to have a position. He has to have the skill necessary to follow through on his promises and translate his position into policy.

Another idea for improving campaigns is to focus more on the character of candidates, which may get us closer to understanding how they would operate in the Oval Office. That?s also a promising notion, but the way we end up judging candidates? characters is pretty silly?by looking for press conference gaffes, dissecting the meals they ate when they were a young married couple, or assessing the way they play basketball.

So here?s a thought: What if we approached presidential campaigns the way a large corporation approaches its search for a new chief executive? The purpose of the campaign would be to test for the skills and attributes actually required for the job. Companies such as McDonald's and Target do this even at the junior levels. Applicants are asked questions like ?Tell us about a conflict at work you helped resolve? and ?What?s the biggest obstacle you overcame?? The qualities employers are seeking are the same ones voters should be looking for in presidential candidates: initiative, experience, creativity, and problem solving.

Alas, when candidates are asked questions that might shed some light on these abilities, they run or dodge. They're trained not to answer hypothetical questions and to tell only heroic tales about their past.

Well, nuts. That doesn?t mean we can?t try to ask these questions anyway. This series will look at the qualities a president actually needs to do the job as a way to better test for them during a presidential campaign. It?s hard to say which attributes are most necessary for a president, if for no other reason than we don?t know what he will face. It?s also hard to put your finger on how to measure certain qualities that will be revealed only under the pressure of a presidency. There is no training for the Oval Office. Still, we?ve got to do something with all of these television hours, rallies, and conversations with the neighbors, so consider four qualities to guide the way we evaluate candidates for the job:

Political skill: Campaigns give us a good idea of a candidate?s priorities, but can they read the political landscape they?ll face when they get to office? Are they honest enough to win voters? trust but ruthless enough cut a deal with their enemies when necessary? Are they comfortable with the schmoozing, backslapping, and ego-massaging that comes with the job?

Management ability: Is the candidate focused enough to follow an overarching vision, but nimble enough to tweak that vision when real-world events intervene? Can they admit mistakes and learn from them? Can they sift through complex ideas? Can they recognize baloney when it comes from their staff or supporters? Do they know how to hire a good team?

Persuasiveness: Do they know how to deliver a good speech? Do they know when to stay quiet? Do they know how to read public opinion? Is it possible for a president to short circuit Congress by taking an issue directly to the people?

Temperament: Has the candidate ever faced a true crisis? Do they have the equanimity to handle the erratic and unpredictable pressures of the office? How are they with uncertainty?

You?ll notice a word that is missing here: leadership. We can all agree that a president should be a leader, but what does that mean? Gen. George Patton or Mahatma Gandhi??It depends on the circumstance. The word leadership in presidential politics only distracts or obscures. What a president's critics really mean when they say he "isn't leading" is that he hasn't announced that he is supporting their plan. Challengers vow to show leadership, but that amounts to little more than saying they?ll magically pass the vast programs they?re promising. They don?t want anyone to ask the ?how? question. They want you to assume that a leader can get anything done.

Rather than testing for leadership, we should recognize that leadership is actually the sum of these four attributes?and probably a few more. These attributes, unlike the vaporous leadership mantle, are more measurable qualities. We shouldn?t let politicians get away with asserting they have this magical ability when we can bore down a little deeper to see whether they have these necessary and underlying traits.

I am not claiming that by looking at things this way we can produce a mathematical formula for candidates. There is no Myers-Briggs test for successful presidents. But unlike the mindless speculation over who will get the nod to be a candidate?s running mate, at least thinking about these is not completely useless. In the end, searching for the answers should help bring the candidates into somewhat clearer focus.

And I hope you?ll pitch in to help me. Name your own attributes and email us at slatepolitics@gmail.com. Make your case for skills that are important and why you think so. I know you?ll also feel free to critique the reasoning in these articles, and I?ll write a follow-up article reframing my thinking based on the best input.

The end goal is not, nor should it be, a bleached contest drained of all drama. Different people will reach different conclusions about how much experience or management ability a particular candidate has, and one attribute may overshadow all the rest given the particular demands of the moment. The goal is to help us better think about the qualities these presidential candidates may actually need once in office. On Election Day, voters must take a leap. But maybe this exercise can help them see a little more clearly where we might land.
