Mariachi El Bronx got its start as The Bronx, an L.A. hardcore band. But, as the name change indicates, the group took an unexpected turn with a recent mariachi-themed reinvention. It's a smart way to bring together two dominant movements in Mariachi El Bronx's hometown: the L.A. punk scene and the city's large immigrant community. (Imagine, for example, Black Flag working with Los Lobos.)

Recorded live at The Gorge on Friday, May 27, Mariachi El Bronx helps kick off the 2011 Sasquatch Music Festival outside Seattle, Wash.
