Home improvements up, contractors willing to negotiate

Local contractors say more and more people are looking to remodel and improve their homes, rather than buy or build a new one. Some contractors are even willing to wheel and deal to meet their clients? needs.

?We have a lot of work put into it already and we knew we liked the house but it started with where we needed a new roof,? says Chippewa Falls homeowner Mary Campbell.

Campbell says that's when she looked into getting the exterior of her home redone.

Don Redetzke who owns a home in Eau Claire says he's not about to move out of his home anytime soon either.

?We spent many years building up the landscaping and yard so staying here is definitely what we've chose to do,? says Redetzke.

Chad Asher of Asher Enterprises Inc, says he's seen a huge increase in home improvements.

?A lot of people are finding not going into new reconstruction because maybe the banks because it?s a harder criteria right now for not qualifying for new construction,? says Asher, ?It?s a lot less expensive to remodel an existing home verses building a new.?

And when budget is tight, he says there is room for negotiation to meet clients? needs.

?If people have a budget set we try to find out what that criterion is first and we'll specify products to fit their budget needs,? says Asher.

And a tip for those who want to barter?

?It?s important upfront to know what exactly what they're looking at having done in the improvements and make sure everyone is bidding apples to apples,? he says.

And Asher says to get up to three bids to be exact. But he says it's most important that you feel comfortable with the contractor you're doing business with.

?It doesn?t matter if you have a contractor out there who has the lowest price or the highest price. It?s who you feel is going to deliver the end product at the end of the day,? says Asher.

Campbell says that?s how she determined to choose Asher Enterprises.

?We did a lot of shopping, looking at different places, quotes, but we liked the customer service they gave us,? says Campbell.
