MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - More and more Baby Boomers aren't looking to retire in the warm states of Florida and Arizona anymore.?In fact, many are either not moving at all, or stopping just a little further north for new places to call home.
"I like the breeze off the ocean and I love the fact that it's not a consistent heat like a place like Florida," Said Julie Shaak.?She lives in Pennsylvania but puts Myrtle Beach on the top of her places to retire list.
According to a new report, more people are trying to retire closer to their homes in the northeast.?And this spike in Baby Boomers looking for new places to live means more business for Myrtle Beach retirement communities.
"We are about to start a major renovation here," Said Michael Beard, Executive Director at Myrtle Beach Manor.?"Converting a whole wing to what we call Rehab to Home which is designed for the Boomers when they do need hip or knee replacements."
Beard said Myrtle Beach saw more than 40 percent growth since 2000 of people 65 and older in Myrtle Beach.
Beard adds it's because people like Shaak who would rather move to Myrtle Beach than have to commute from Florida to see family.
"It would take a day away from vacation to get here and get home from here," Said Shaak.? "Where here [in Myrtle Beach], it's a half a day and it would just be more appealing for me and for them as well."
