Established St Louis roofing companies are doing their part to protect homeowners with storm damaged homes against companies that Missouri lawmakers have termed as "storm vultures." These out of state roofing contractors persuade their victims to hire their services on the premise that these companies will pay or rebate a homeowner's insurance deductible.
Oftentimes, these promises are made in the aftermath of natural disasters. Consumers have contacted the Better Business Bureau (BBB), complaining that the repairs promised by these companies were left unfinished even after they have signed insurance checks payable to these firms.
BBB President and CEO Michelle Corey states that the law protects consumers against these dubious practices. The bureau advises, however, that even though consumers don't want to shell out more money for repairs, they should be wary of companies claiming to be able to finish the work for less than the figures quoted by their insurance companies.
Corey also warns people against hiring contractors who may give a substantially lower quote than actual market rates. They may end up using substandard materials to compensate for their low ball bid or they might fail to complete the job to the customer's specifications.
