Rick Santorum the Right Choice for the 2012 Presidential Race (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum officially announced that he will be running for the Republican nomination in the 2012 presidential race Monday on Good Morning America. Although Santorum has major flaws, he also has three major advantages: strong social conservative beliefs, a great resume in politics and being a passionate animal rights activist.

Social Conservative Beliefs

For politicians campaigning for the Republican nomination, it is essential to be faithful to the party while also having strong traditional beliefs. Santorum meets these requirements and much more, as he is known for his assertive and powerful stance for maintaining the traditional sense of marriage, maintaining a tight fiscal budget and for bravely supporting the Iraq War.

During his tenure as senator of Pennsylvania, Santorum was a financial and economic genius, as he persuaded many residents of his state to bravely search for an employment position. Besides being a probable favorite amongst fiscal conservatives, Santorum is also known for arduously fighting against abortion, same-sex marriage and is against policies to reform welfare. In line with his ardent conservatism, Santorum has a loving wife and seven children.

Extensive Resume in Politics

Unlike President Obama, who was unfortunately victorious in 2008, Santorum has entered the 2012 presidential race with a very impressive resume. Born in 1958 and raised a Roman Catholic, Santorum has had many leadership roles in politics; these include chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania's 18th District and a senior sellow with the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C.

Staying with his true passion for politics, Santorum was also a key member of the Fox News Channel; this served as another medium to voice his social and conservative beliefs and values. For voters who appreciate strong leadership in the House of Representatives and the Senate, Santorum is the right choice and will attract many conservative voters.

Animal Rights Activist

In a sense, the "cherry on top" for Santorum's political platform is that he is well-known for being a devoted and dedicated animal rights activist. As an individual and politician who is vehemently against animal abuse and neglect, the former senator teamed with senators Dick Durbin and Arlen Specter to attempt to pass the Pet Animal Welfare Statute of 2005 (PAWS) in which animals would have been ensured proper care and nourishment by their breeders. Also, if the bill had passed, puppy mills could have been rightfully modified and possibly eliminated.

Nevertheless, Santorum is the right candidate for Republicans who desire a candidate with strong and consistent social conservative beliefs, an admirable resume in politics and a life-long passion for animals.
